With the film festival season now in full flow, we're seeing a number of inspiring shorts appear on our screens. We spotlight five short films to watch this autumn.
The Short Trip

Winning the Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film at this year’s Venice International Film Festival, The Short Trip by Erenik Beqiri tells the story of Klodi and Mira, a young Albanian couple, who decide to marry Mira to a Frenchman for 5 years in exchange for money, so she can obtain French nationality.
Area Boy
Iggy London
From 4 to 15 October, the BFI London Film Festival presents a compelling and diverse programme of works from 92 countries. Included in the line-up is an impressive number of short films, including Area Boy by Iggy London. The short is a coming-of-age film about an aimless teenager who has moved to the outer edges of a provincial town with his mother.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
Wes Anderson
Four new short films by Wes Anderson are released this week on Netflix. Alongside The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Anderson is bringing his adaptation of the Roald Dahl short story, plus three more – The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison – to your home screens.
Berry Pickers
Agnes Skonare Karlsson
Although this short was released in 2022, the full film has become recently available on Vimeo’s Staff Pick Premieres with director’s commentary and more in an interactive version. Written and directed by Agnes Skonare Karlsson, the 15 minute film tells the story of a Thai migrant worker having to find blueberries in a Swedish forest during an exceptionally hot summer.
1001 Nights
Rea Rajčić
Appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, 1001 NIGHTS follows two octogenarians and their the nightly ritual of watching (and discussing) Turkish soap operas. For them is so much more than a means of passing the time. Rea Rajčić’s short film is a delightful documentary.
